Concert Introduction
"One of the most exciting and sought-after conductors on the international scene today." — The Guardian
One of the world’s most acclaimed conductors, Andris Nelsons, returns to Taiwan with the legendary Gewandhausorchester Leipzig—the world’s oldest civic orchestra. Together, they will unleash the overwhelming sonic intensity of Shostakovich and Wagner with a full-scale ensemble. Featuring top-tier Wagnerian specialists from the Bayreuth Festival, this performance promises to weave the deep, majestic "Leipzig Sound" into a mythic musical tapestry.
"...Nelsons’s Shostakovich 10th is a truly earth-shaking performance" — The Guardian
Taipei | Rachmaninoff & Shostakovich
Nelsons joins forces with Yulianna Avdeeva, Gold Medalist of the International Chopin Piano Competition, for Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2. The program culminates in Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10, delivered with the authoritative vision that earned Nelsons four Grammy Awards for his Shostakovich cycle.
" Nelsons’s 'Walküre' was exciting but never rushed, and the players responded with Wagnerian sound at its most sumptuous.." — The New York Times
Tainan | Schumann & Wagner
Schumann’s Symphony No. 1 "Spring" was world-premiered by this very orchestra in 1841 under the baton of Felix Mendelssohn. 185 years later, the Gewandhausorchester returns to recreate this "purest authentic sound."
The second half features a concert performance of Wagner’s masterpiece Die Walküre, Act I. Led by Nelsons—who has conducted at the Bayreuth Festival for seven consecutive years—the stage features the most prominent Wagnerian tenor of our time, Klaus Florian Vogt, alongside Bayreuth regulars Johanni van Oostrum and Georg Zeppenfeld.
